The BEAM Plus Existing Buildings V2.0 Selective Scheme is the rating tool catered to aged buildings. The rating tool enables building owners and property managers to assess and make improvements on the sustainability issues that are material in achieving the sustainable operations of the building. Moreover, the Selective Scheme provides the flexibility for have their buildings certified in individual aspects. There are no prerequisites under the Selective Scheme. Therefore, all buildings regardless of their age could participate in the certification and be fairly assessed against a credible assessment criteria.

Stepwise Embedding Sustainability Principles into Operations
As the Administration Headquarters of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs), the property management team underwent a series of improvement initiatives in phase to improve the sustainability performance of the building. First, its facility management practice has been improved, that leads the building to have attained the environmental management system certification under ISO 14001 and energy management system certification under ISO 50001. Also, a series of site related improvement initiatives has been enforced, including the installation of a green roof, introduction of organic farming programme for the building users and signing of the charter on external lighting. Moreover, green procurement and recycling policy has been formulated and implemented. Over 70% of ongoing consumables purchased are environmentally friendly. Most importantly, energy saving practices have been put in place, for example, equipment and lighting are controlled on and off based on the operation schedule, in order to avoid idling.
TWGHs Wong Fung Ling Memorial Building has demonstrated that the implementation of sustainability measures is possible in aged buildings, through the stepwise approach. The building has achieved Excellent Grade in multiple aspects under BEAM Plus Existing Buildings V2.0 Selective Scheme, including Management, Site aspect, Materials and Waste aspect, Energy Use aspect, Water aspect and Indoor Environmental Quality aspect.
